Doug Levy is an American contemporary artist, highly influenced by the Postwar Expressionists, concentrating on Abstract Painting and Printmaking, and also experimenting with diverse materials such as aluminum, encaustic, and found objects. He has shown and sold his work through many art galleries in Southern California, predominantly in the Los Angeles area, for over two decades. He simultaneously heads a thriving landscape design firm. More recently Doug has expanded his art practice to compose a body of whimsical but functional, individually-crafted pieces for the home. Just as in his fine art, no two works are alike, and each piece is both highly practical and visually captivating.
Doug’s Statement: I paint what I feel with fearless abandon and exuberance, but in my heart lives an extreme need for and love of order…that is where safety lies for me. My sheer, impromptu expressiveness alone cannot lead to the balanced completeness that is embodied in my work and life. I know how to mix contrary things and thoughts so that they look harmonious.
For me, a perfect composition, and a perfectly human one, involves visual spontaneity contained in comforting, if casual, borders.
